We can see the lacemaker took some liberties with the pattern, and changed the tape used for the center element. The method of making tape laces is visible on the back: the tapes are stitched to the pattern with long stitches. When the spaces between the tapes have been filled with needlework, these long stitches are cut, and the lace released from the pattern.
