Mechlin lace before the classic braided mesh came into being. This early eighteenth century lace -- probably 1700 to 1715 -- has the rose ground, also known as five-hole or cinq trous.
Length about 1 1/3 yards. A seam at just about the yard mark. 1 inch wide.
The top edge is still in good condition, probably protected over much of its long life by an engrelure. The bottom edge is frayed, and just a very few of the original picots are left intact. Quite a bit of wear, and some careful mends.
