Burano Fragment

About 2 1/2 inches at the widest point.

Little fragment that contains all the features characteristic of Burano needle lace.

Clothwork is formed of closely worked, dense buttonhole stitches.

Mesh is similar to the Alencon mesh, worked of loose buttonhole stitches with a return thread wrapping the bottom side, with a key difference. A difference in tension gives it a rectangular or square, ladderlike shape instead of the more hexagonal shape of the Alencon mesh. A slightly slubby thread often gives the mesh a slight hazy appearance.

The outline is, however, the most distinctive difference. A heavy outline or coronnet is attached with widely spaced overcast stitches. Never say never, but this is the only needle lace where the outline thread is attached in this way.
