Embroidered Scrollwork "C"

11 3/4 inch square.

A nineteenth-century style embroidered monogram in a twentieth century handkerchief. This is an exquisitely embroidered monogram -- much more detail within the letter than is usually found. Unfortunately, there are slight flaws in the fabric.

Detail of embroideryDetail of embroiderypadThe detail of raised, padded satin stitch scrolling detail above a field of dense sanding stitch gives this top-heavy "C" great depth and texture.

Detail of conditionDetail of conditionpadResidue from a label is not as obvious in real life as in this image, nevertheless it is there. Handkerchief was washed, and the residue is still there. Have not tried solvents. Some might think the bit of a label adds a bit of cachet to the handkerchief, so I've left it there. There is another pencil-like mark on the fabric, that appears only on the back side of the fabric. It appears to be a slight stain from a colored thread that attached itself to the fabric at some point in washing, and the color bled a bit into the white fabric. This also did not come out in simple washing, might with something like RIT color remover.

Detail of EdgeDetail of EdgepadThe style of edge, with rows of fine raised threads just above the hand-rolled hem is characteristic of twentieth century handkerchiefs. Nineteenth century would more likely have had drawn work hem.
