Point de Gaze (Rose Point) Fragment

Small fragment that includes all the features characteristic of Point de Gaze needle lace, also called Rose Point for the floral rose motif sometimes include in the designs.

The clothwork is fairly loosely worked of buttonhole stitches with a return thread in each row. This return thead, stitched over by the next row of buttonhole stitches, allows the clothwork to be more quickly worked with fewer stitches, yet have enough density to define the design.

The mesh is very distinctive: it is simply rows of widely spaced twisted buttonhole stitches.

The outline or coronnet that defines the edges of all of the clothwork, and gives the lace a bit of dimension, is made up of several threads attached with buttonhole stitches spaced far enough apart that the threads below are still visible.
