Unfinished Honiton Point Tape Lace

This is a little bit of unfinished tape lace, still attached to the hand-inked pattern on a woven paper-like cloth. We have chosen to call it "Honiton Point" because it includes bits of segmented tape of the style sometimes called "Honiton" tapes in turn-of-the century Sears Roebuck's catalogs. The lacemaker was using three different tapes -- two straight and one segmented.

Details of Honiton Point UFODetails of Honiton Point UFOpadWe can see the lacemaker took some liberties with the pattern, and changed the tape used for the center element.

The method of making tape laces is visible on the back: the tapes are stitched to the pattern with long stitches. When the spaces between the tapes have been filled with needlework, these long stitches are cut, and the lace released from the pattern.
