Doily, 9 inches across, with Point de Paris bobbin lace 2 1/2 inches deep, with symbols of the allied nations:
The Rooster for France, the Lion for Belgium, the Unicorn for England, and the Bear for Russia.
Charlotte Kellogg, writing in her book “Bobbins of Belgium” describes the making of laces in Turnhout, in the north of Belgium, worked with designs of the animals symbolizing the allied nations: ...”But I had to go on to room number one on the ground floor where there was another Point de Paris class, for girls about twelve years old. ...The first striking difference between this room and the primary, was in the number of bobbins piled on the cushions -- there were hundreds now instead of dozens....The designs were already complicated, one of them represented, for instance, the animal symbols of the allied nations.” The book includes photos of doilies just like this one, made in Turnhout.
NOTE ON CONDITION: No two doilies are exactly alike. All are in excellent condition with no breaks in the lace; most have no stains. We will let you know if we must sent one with a small stain.
Purchaser of the doily can request a photocopy of the pages from Kellogg's book describing the lacemaking schools at the end of World War I.

 | Russian Bear The inclusion of the bear dates the lace to before 1917, and the Russian revolution. After that, the bear was not included in these “War Laces”.
