Mechlin bobbin lace, Circa 1760-70

Exquisite Mechlin (Malines) bobbin lace edging, that might have been new at the time the French Revolution was brewing. This type of design, with a meandering trail of flowers and leaves that take up less than half of the space of the edging, was typical of the late eighteenth century, about 1760-1790.

This piece is about 50 inches long, and about 2 inches wide (about 2 1/4 if the engrelure, or top edge, is added in). Condition is quite good, with just one tear about 3/4 inch long, and a few microscopic mends. There are two exquisite seams that probably are original to the time the lace was made. The join matches up the meshes exactly, and does not overlap.

Several different decorative filling stitches along the bottom edge.
