Exquisite Mechlin (Malines) bobbin lace edging, that might have been new at the time the French Revolution was brewing.This type of design, with a meandering trail of flowers and leaves that take up less than half of the space of the edging, was typical of the late eighteenth century, about 1760-1790. This piece is about 50 inches long, and about 2 inches wide (about 2 1/4 if the engrelure, or top edge, is added in). Condition is quite good, with just one tear about 3/4 inch long, and a few microscopic mends. There are two exquisite seams that probably are original to the time the lace was made.
